Hello premade template, welcome to the PowerPoint Forum.

Could you tell us a little bit more about the specific problem you are experiencing?

For example, does PowerPoint begin to open your presentation and then crashes or becomes non-responsive?

Or do you simply receive an error message when you try to open your ppt file?

Hi premade template,

there are several possible causes for PowerPoint reporting this error.

  • The presentation was created in PowerPoint 2002/ PowerPoint XP and is password protected.
  • The ppt file is corrupted.
  • You are using PowerPoint 2003 but have not updated or installed any Microsoft Office Service Packs.

If you are using PowerPoint 2003 premade template, please install the latest Microsoft Office Service Packs.

Thanks for clarifying your operating system and version of PowerPoint premade template. It helps enormously in identifying the reason for why PowerPoint can't open the type of file represented by presentation.ppt.

If the presentation.ppt file is on a network drive and is opened on a Mac version of PowerPoint then PowerPoint will display the error message.

This is because if the presentation.ppt file is open in a Mac version of PowerPoint and you or someone else also attempt to open the file using a PC and a PC version of PowerPoint such as PowerPoint 2003, PowerPoint appears to lock the file and make it unreadable creating the error message.

If you close the ppt file on the Mac you will find that the error messge no longer appears and that the file can be opened as usual.

I have to say I am truly impressed Charles. How on earth did you figure that out? You are like the guru of PowerPoint ppt!

I have been struggling with this error for days and thought the presentation was corrupted and I would need to remake the presentation again in PowerPoint

I never thought to check with the other guys here if anyone had the presentation open but the file was open on another machine here so you were right it was locked and that is why I've not been able to open it.

I closed the presentation on the other machine and it opens with no problem now on my Mac.

Thanks so much Charles, not only for your help but the speed of your replies. This is a great forum. The best I've come across for PowerPoint and will definetly post the URL on my blog with my fullest recommendations.
