Hi slideman,
welcome to the 123PPT Community and PowerPoint Forum.

http://www.123ppt.com/powerpoint-backgrounds/ - PowerPoint Backgrounds are essentially graphic image files which you can insert and use as a background on your slides and in any slide of any PowerPoint presentation.

http://www.123ppt.com/powerpoint-templates/ - PowerPoint Templates are layout designs that not only provide background images on your slides, but also object holders such as text, slide titles, and definitons such as font type, font size, font colours etc.

A PowerPoint Template typically has 3 main slide designs:
  1. The Title Master which acts as the title slide for your presentation.
  2. The Slide Master which acts as slide you add your presentation content into. Typically it resembles and has many of the same qualities of the Title Master but is created to allow slide content to be more optimally displayed.
  3. The Print Master is in essence the same as the Slide Master but is created to maximise legibility and minimise ink for printing and hardcopy handouts.

So in short slideman, the essential difference between a PowerPoint Template and a PowerPoint Background is that a PowerPoint Template provides a complete layout which you can simply apply to your existing presentation or copy your slide content into to make use of the PowerPoint Template design.

A PowerPoint Background does not offer these features as it is in essence an image. An image which can be easily applied to the background of your slides to change the background of any slide in your presentation.
