Dear Sirs,

I have a question for you to assist me.

My name is Rev. Phillipe Augoin. I am parish priest for my congregation in a small town in southern France.

I am asking to you for assistence with me.

I am to give a preaching to my congregation on Sunday and I have thought about to use PowerPoint and technology for added extra in affect for the word of our God Almighty.

Is it you can help to me with how to do this and what is the best way to helping me with this to spread the word of our Lord to our congregation?

With blessings,

Rev. Rev. Phillipe Augoin

Dear Reverend Phillipe,

thank you for your question for us here at 123PPT.com.

The use of PowerPoint in preaching, sermons, and gatherings, is most common place in for example the United States, the United Kingdom, and Europe, and could perhaps be seen merely as a next step in terms of communicating with your local parish.

Naturally, as with the spoken word itself, content is still of greatest importance Phillipe, and may I ask what your thoughts of using PowerPoint are? so that I may better understand your situation.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Thank you to reply Jonathan,

my thoughts are to use PowerPoint to project some words from the scriptures and writings of the gospel of John.

I will be speaking to my congregation of a story of a local peasant girl who lived in a local village many years ago and how is the same as a passage from the gospel according to John.

I think that using PowerPoint is project large words against our altar will help my story understand is purpose with my congregation no?

I would agree totally with you Phillipe. I believe that using a projector is indeed a very strong way to gain the attention of your congregation and perhaps no where more strongly captured than at your church's altar.

I would advise you in this case Reverend, not to use a PowerPoint template, or design, as I think that this would distract your audience and lessen the impact of oyur reading.

Using only large bold words that have a clear and apparent contrast to the colour of your altar is a very storng and powerful way to put specific words or phrases to your congregation and have those words stand out and carry great weight.

If I may also suggest Phillipe, do not use any music or background sound effects, or visual imagery such as photographs or illustrations.

As you speak your congregation will of course be listening to your every word. Using PowerPoint and a projector to porject key words and phrases from your speech onto your altar will help your audience understand and appreciate the importance of these words.

Using images, or music, would again detract your audience from these words and their power, and lessen their strength.

Often music and images used incorreclty can also be problematic in that it can appear as a parody or comedic Reverend, and again I would imagine the point of your story is serious and has valid meaning?

Dear Phillipe,

what I mean is that in using only large bold projected words against your altar instead of images, or music, the power and strength of these words will be much greater and have a greater impact and effect upon your audience.

You can of course use images and music if you wish, but I would recommend not to do so to maxmize the impact of your sermon.

Dear Reverend,

connecting your projector to your pc couldn't be simpler. I have enclosed below simple step by step guides to how you can achieve this.

First, set up the projector.

  • Connect the projector to power.
  • Turn on the projector.
  • Adjust projector's image to the screen. (This is usually done before the computer is connected to the computer.)
  • Adjust the image size to use as much of the screen as possible.
  • Use the projector's adjustable front legs to raise the image to the proper elevation.(Generally the top of the image should be at the top of the screen.)
  • The top of the image may be lowered to avoid the keystone effect.
  • Center the image on the screen.
  • Focus the image.
  • Connect video cord to projector (don't connect to the computer yet).
  • Make sure the video connector has the correct plugs to match the computer.
  • Make sure the correct connector is used if a universal video connector is used.(There are several different ports that allow the projector to be connected to different computers. Some universal projectors have switches that must be set to make the correct computer connection.)

Second, set up the computer.

  • Set the computer screen resolution to the same resolution as the projector.
  • Most newer projectors have the ability to project images that are a lower resolution than the projector’s resolution. It is generally best to use the highest resolution available.
  • Be careful not to sacrifice the number of colors that the computer can use at high resolution. (Unexpected results could occur if the computer video used during the presentation does not support the same number of colors used during development of the slide show.)

If you must change your computer screen resolution

  • Place the cursor into a blank region of the desktop screen.
  • Right-click the mouse or pointer and select Properties.
  • Select Settings in the Properties box.
  • Select the screen setting and test before applying the new resolution.
  • Press Yes if the screen was properly viewed. (Note: some computers must be restarted in order for the new resolution to be used.)

Lastly, connecting the projector and the computer.

  • Connect the projector's connection cord to the computer's video port usually found on the back of most laptop computers, but be very careful not to bend the small pins in the video plug.
  • Use the computer's function keys to activate the video port. (Be patient when changing the settings some projectors take time to sense the computer's video output and adjust the projected image.

You should now be able to run and view your presentation Phillipe.
