Hi misX,
welcome to the PowerPoint Presenters Forum. Nice to have you with us.
I'm not totally certain of your question misX as to whether you want PowerPoint to read from your USB drive/ memory pen? Or if you want to create an application that can load and read presentations from a USB drive/ memory pen dynamically?
So if you can describe your problem a little more misX, I',m sure the forum member will be able to help you and offer presentation advice.
USB 2.0 is the common standard for file transfers via the USB port misX. A PowerPoint presentation can be made on your computer or any computer that has PowerPoint installed and then saved to the USB drive/ memory pen for easy portable storage.
If you need to create a presentation that can be played on any computer even without PowerPoint installed, then you can use PowerPoint Viewer to convert your presentations so that the Viewer can open and read presentations on machines where PowerPoint itself is not installed.
If your aim is to run your company presentations from a USB memory pen that your company perhaps gives away as corporate gifts. And you want the presentation to run directly from the USB pen, (using the computer's copy of PowerPoint 2003 if present or the USB drive's copy of the Viewer if not), then you would need to run Autorun Presenter for example as a third party application to acheive this result.

Hi again misX,
when you say "create an application" I assume that you are not talking about using PowerPoint but rather creating a windows based application in for example Visual Basic, C, C+, etc. ?

I would recommend Visual Basic over C, C+, or Java, simply for ease of use misX.
It would seem that your biggest challenge will not integrating the PowerPoint module to read a presentation, since all of Microsoft's products are open source. But that your biggest challenge will be the dynamic reading off the memory stick/ pen from a USB source.
I would imagine that you would need to script outside of PowerPoint / in other words have a background application running that is able to detect when a USB storage device is detected and is able to then dynamically launch PowerPoint or the Viewer gaining a dynamic path to the file locaton on the storage device in order to launch.
I'm not certain that's entirely possible misX. But certainly the theory is there.

it seems that i have the same problem as misx. i wonder if she has already found a solution?
anyways let me state my problem
i need to build a device that is connected to a projector (via VGA out) and also has the capability of reading a thumbdrive that contains PowerPoint .ppt files. for simplicity's sake, lets just assume all the ppt files are from microsoft powerpoint 2003. as for the device itself, i decided to build a small form factor pc, one that is capable of running windows xp. so the hardware part shouldnt be a problem. what im having problems with is the software part of the project. so far, i have little to non existent program experience. i browsed the internet and found the autorun presenter mentioned in one of your replies. it is perhaps that kind of software that i need to build for my device. i really need some advice!
thank you
