Hi,

I can't seem to open a PowerPoint presentation my colleague has sent to me. Can anyone help?

I've tried opening the presentation in both PowerPoint 2007 and PowerPoint 2003 but it won't open the file

My colleague says the presentation was porduced in PowerPoint 2000 so it should open in both PowerPoint 2007 and PowerPoint 2003 shouldn't it?

Thanks for any help, Paul.

Windows can often have difficulties opening any file, including a PowerPoint file, if the file itself does not have a file extension.

Often when PowerPoint presentation files are created on the Apple Mac for example, a file extension such as .ppt or .pps is not written to the presentation file, and so when the file is opened on the Windows platform, PowerPoint cannot determine which application should open the application.

If your colleague has sent you a file that you are unable to open, it may well be that the PowerPoint presentation does not have a file extension. To correct this simply save the presentation to your desktop. Right mouseclick the file and select Rename from the dialog options. Add the .ppt file extension.

Once you have renamed your file click outside the file to save the filename and now try to doubleclick the presentation. PowerPoint should open the presentation successfully and you may edit the PowerPoint file.

Hi Jonathan,

many many thanks. You were right. It seems there was no file extension to the PowerPoint presentation so it would not open.
